College Internships in Counseling
Elk River internships provide outstanding learning experiences for students pursuing careers in social work, clinical counseling, psychology, and nursing.
Hundreds of teenagers from across the United States have been successfully treated at Elk River Treatment Program. Our typical client is aged 12 to 18 and presents with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse. We often treat troubled teens that are experiencing negative behaviors, failing grades, learning differences, attachment disorders, trauma, grief, physical or emotional abuse and addictions from video games to sex to illegal/legal substances. Elk River accepts and treats adolescents that similar programs consider medically fragile and turn away.
All aspects of clinical service are addressed in our internship, including individualized training as needed and appropriate. Students may:
- Assist treatment teams with caseload
- Shadow counselors in individual, group and family therapy
- Lead groups
- Attend staff meetings/training
- Receive regular supervision from licensed professionals
Interns observe and provide supervised assistance in treatment modalities including:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy
